Ingredients

12 oz (340g) mozzarella cheese sticks, cut in half

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 large eggs

1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for added crunch)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for a spicy kick)

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Marinara sauce, for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Cheese: Begin by placing the halved mozzarella sticks in the freezer for about 30 minutes. This chilling step helps maintain their structure while frying, ensuring they don’t ooze out.

Set Up the Breading Station: Organize your breading setup with three bowls:

      - In the first bowl, mix the all-purpose flour with a pinch of salt and pepper to season it lightly.

        - In the second bowl, whisk the large eggs until smooth and well combined.

          - In the third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, cayenne pepper (if desired for heat), and an additional pinch of salt. Mix thoroughly to blend the spices evenly.

Coat the Cheese: Retrieve the chilled mozzarella sticks from the freezer. Start the coating process by dipping each stick into the flour first, ensuring it is evenly covered. Gently shake off any excess flour. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, roll the stick in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to help the crumbs adhere well. Repeat this process for all mozzarella sticks.

Double Dip for Extra Crunch (Optional): For those who crave an even crunchier texture, repeat the egg and breadcrumb dipping process for each coated cheese stick.

Heat the Oil: In a deep frying pan or pot, pour in enough oil to reach about 2 inches in depth. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). To test if the oil is ready, drop in a small piece of bread; if it sizzles and bubbles, it’s perfect for frying.

Fry the Cheese Sticks: Carefully add a few coated mozzarella sticks into the hot oil, being cautious not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown and develop a crispy exterior.

Drain and Cool: Once golden and crispy, use a slotted spoon to lift the sticks from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels. This will help absorb any excess oil, keeping them crispy.

Serve: Present your golden mozzarella sticks hot and crunchy, accompanied by a warm bowl of marinara sauce for dipping!
