For Assembly:

2 cups cooked pasta (penne or rigatoni recommended)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

    - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

      Make the Meatballs:

        - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef or sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, egg, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, oregano, and optional red pepper flakes.

          - Mix the ingredients gently until they are just combined. Avoid overmixing for tender meatballs.

            - Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and arrange them on a baking sheet.

              Cook the Meatballs:

                - Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for approximately 20-25 minutes, until they are browned and fully cooked.

                  Prepare the Marinara Sauce:

                    - While the meatballs are baking, heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until it becomes translucent.

                      - Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.

                        - Add the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Allow the sauce to simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to meld the flavors.

                          Assemble the Casserole:

                            - In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta, freshly baked meatballs, and marinara sauce. Stir until everything is well coated.

                              - Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish. Evenly sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.

                                Bake the Casserole:

                                  - Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbling, and lightly golden.

                                    Serve:

                                      - Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves to add a burst of color and freshness.
