Before you begin assembling your casserole, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This temperature is ideal for developing a golden crust while ensuring that the cheese melts perfectly. While the oven heats, prepare your baking dish. A standard 9x13-inch casserole dish works well for this recipe. Lightly grease the dish with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking and facilitate easy serving.

Ingredients

1 baguette, sliced into 1-inch pieces

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated

1 cup cooked Italian sausage, crumbled

1 cup salami, thinly sliced

1 cup diced cooked ham

1/2 cup green olives, pitted and sliced

1/2 cup black olives, pitted and sliced

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.

Prepare the Baking Dish: Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish using either cooking spray or a thin layer of butter, ensuring an easy release after baking.

Layer the Bread: Place half of the baguette slices into the bottom of the greased baking dish, arranging them so that they slightly overlap for even coverage.

Add Meats and Cheese: On top of the bread layer, evenly distribute half of the crumbled Italian sausage, thinly sliced salami, and diced ham. Follow with a generous sprinkle of half of the sharp cheddar and Gruyère cheeses.

Incorporate the Olives: Scatter both types of olives (green and black) evenly over the cheese layer, adding a burst of flavor.

Repeat the Layers: Layer the remaining baguette slices on top, followed by the leftover Italian sausage, salami, ham, and the remaining shredded cheeses in the same fashion as before.

Whisk the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and season generously with salt and black pepper until the mixture is thoroughly combined and slightly frothy.

Pour Over the Casserole: Carefully pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish, making sure to soak all the bread pieces adequately.

Press Down: With clean hands, gently press down on the casserole to ensure that all the bread absorbs the delicious egg mixture fully.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 20-25 minutes. The casserole is ready when the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, take the casserole out of the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing it into portions. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color and serve warm.
